US Mens Team Report
USA 1-0 Morrocco

This was supposed to be a "warmup" for the Men's National Team and the first of a series of three to get them ready for the World Cup.  Instead, it became an embarrassment and an expose' of the shortcomings of this team.

Aren't you just a bit over the top?  Nope, don't think so.  This is the World Cup folks, its not tiddly winks and like in war, being "politically correct" gets you killed.  To succeed at this level of international competition you must be decisive, precise and show no quarter.  When your opponent allows an opportunity you must take it.  If you fail to do that, you lose.  Period.  End of story.  And thats precisely why the USA lost this one.

For starters its time Arena stop relying so heavily on Claudio Reyna.  Over the past two years he's been unfit much of the time and able to take the whistle for his club team in only half their games.  Arena treated him like royalty and didn't call him into the team for most of the qualifying round games.  He's injured most of the time and for the USMNT to rely so heavily on this guy is a mistake.  He isn't able to play often enough to really regain match fitness which only leads to more knocks and time on the bench.  Besides that, the team was much better with Pablo playing in his place in this match against Morocco.  Arena would be smart to drop Reyna and bring in someone else from his alternates whether this new knock for Claudio proves serious or not.  If Arena sticks with Reyna you will almost as sure as the sun will come up tomorrow see him carried from the field in the World Cup opener.  Just drop him and move on.  He's not worth the gamble.

McBride, who had a terrific run with Fulham this past season, was terrible against Morocco.  He couldn't hold the ball at the top of the box and he didn't get his head to so many balls played his way (this is supposed to be his strong suit) that his play in this one became a real negative.  He did have a few opportunities in the opening half but squandered them all.  Frankly, he really didn't threaten goal and should have been replaced at half time with Ching.  Drop him too and call up Twellman.  McBride is done and it showed in this match.  Relying on him as the go to guy is a mistake.  He's likely to have only one decent game out of the first three and we need better than that from him.

Without Eddie Lewis this team is really lame.  The attempts at crosses into the danger area were simply poor without Lewis on the pitch to deliver them.

Arena needs to tell Onyewu to NEVER go past the half way line.

Leverkusen's coaches were right; Donovan isn't good enough.  He's a big fish in a very small pond in MLS but he's not anywhere near the player that many soccer pundits say he is in their efforts to promote him and MLS.  He has a tendency to disappear in big matches and none are bigger than the World Cup.

The only way the US could put pressure on Morocco was by advancing 9 of their 11 leaving only a single defender in front of Keller which is what ended up deciding the game in favor of Morocco.  Cherundolo made a rookie mistake in 2nd half stoppage time   by not playing the ball safely into touch (the correct and professional play).  Instead he attempted to touch the ball wide and get around the attacker who picked his pocket cleanly, made a killer diagonal pass to Mahidi who made Keller look downright pedestrian as he cooly touched the ball over Keller's right shoulder for the match winner.
Cherundolo should know better from his years in the Bundesliga and the USMNT that as a defender in that situation the correct play was the "safe" play.  You simply cannot have mistakes like that and survive at this level.  This is the World Cup, its not the Gold Cup.

Josh Wolf played well but he also seemed more interested in calling for a foul or penalty than he was in finishing or creating a chance on goal.  Despite that, he was far more effective than McBride who almost never disrupted the defense.

Eddie Johnson, who should probably be a starter in the World Cup opener (he probably would be if it wasn't for his attitude that suggests a nonchalant approach to the game much of the time) had the best scoring chance of the match for the USA.  He got free of his marker on a corner and the resulting header was strong and narrowly over the bar.  It was one of those chances that simply must be converted at this level.  Such chances are very few and far between and you simply must make them count.  If you fail, you lose.  This isn't like MLS where you might say I'll get the next one.  At this level there is no next one most of the time.  You either take those few that come your way or you lose.  Period.

Few teams in the field of 32 will manage to create more than a handful of chances in any game.  Those that execute with precision and cash-in those few chances they do create move on.  Teams such as this USA squad will struggle to create even a few quality chances in any given match so precise execution is even more significant when they do.
You either make them count or you go home.

This match showed that lack of quality on the attack that is a distinct shortcoming of this USA team and that one truly good opportunity they managed to create was not taken.  You don't take it, you lose and that is what happened in this match.  For that matter, the team was so hard pressed to create that one really good chance that Arena had to commit two of their three back liners and play three forwards to get it done.  Failing to cash in after that investment to create it decides the match then and there.

Not cashing in that chance meant the push forward had to continue and the result is they are finally exposed and the match winner is conceded.  If that chance had been taken, the defenders would have remained in their customary role and that final break would not have occurred at all.  Not making it count actually led to conceding the goal at the end.

Clearly, the player of the match for the USMNT was Bobby Convey.  He, along with the strategic change by Arena at halftime, injected some life into the side and they actually did have Morocco on the back foot for much of the 2nd half.  This seems positive at first blush, but it also illustrated the lack of creativity and effective attacking play even when they clearly had the upper hand and were in control of the game.  That final ball either never came or when it did it was simply poorly delivered, over hit or worse, nowhere near the point of creating real danger.

John O'Brien needs to quit the Samson role and get a haircut.

Damarcus Beasley was a non-factor which was surprising.

In the end Casey Keller also failed in his big challenge on the day.  A great keeper earns that headline by saving his team.  Keller didn't do that on this day and was made to look quite average while conceding that deciding goal.  Not his fault to be sure, but he also didn't stand up to his giant in goal hype and save the day.

And remember this; these are the same guys that won themselves a 100% per game pay raise (in some cases) just last year.  Do you think US Soccer or the fans got their money's worth?

After a display like this the answer is not in doubt.
