U13 Red Win Columbus Day Tournament
Fort Dix, NJ - (10/8/2007) This is the first season for the newly formed Boys U-13 Red team. Our first time playing together was at the Kirkwood Tournament where we lost two games and won one. This past weekend we played in our second tournament at Ft. Dix with the temperature hovering in the mid-80s with lots of sun and humidity (did someone say it was fall).

On Saturday, we played our first game against the Deptford Lightning team. The first half ended with a score of 0-0. In the second half, forward, Bobby Nepa had a break away and put one away for a score of 1-0. Later in the half, Vince Guzzo, center mid-fielder took a corner kick. The goalie caught and then lost the ball. Everyone was scrambling. Lucky for us Bobby kicked the ball in the goal to make the score 2-0.

Our next game was Sunday morning against the Langhorne Strikers. Our offense dominated in the first half and at halftime we lead 1-0 with Bobby scoring. In the second half, Ken Heist, forward, scored with an assist from mid-fielder, Chris DeAngelis, making it 2-0. Later in the half, Vince Guzzo, sailed a beautiful free kick over the Strikers’ goalie to make the final score 3-0.

Our last game was against the Flemington Galaxy. The Galaxy was a competitive team with good man-to-man coverage making it difficult for us to score. Going into the second half the score was still 0-0. We needed a tie to clinch first place for our flight. With four minutes left in the game, The Galaxy scored 1-0.

Our flight ended with a three-way tie. The final tiebreaker was our win against the Strikers with a three-goal differential. We won first place! It was a total team effort for all three games. Our defense held the opposing teams’ offense in check and limited all three opponents to just 1 goal to our 5. MVP for all three games goes to our awesome goalie, Alex (Cookie) Cooke.
