Devan as a U17 Banshee.

"At the age of seven, I began playing recreation soccer in Galloway.  At age 10, I was asked to play up on a U11 travel team.  I played for two years and made the U11 Select team. At the end of my U12 year, I heard about tryouts for the South Jersey Barons. When showing up for the tryouts, there were not only several girls from my team, but numerous others from teams that I played against on a regular basis. There were at least 30 girls at the tryouts. The Barons were able to form a second U13. They were known as the SJ Banshees East and the SJ Banshees West.

At this point, I was still playing up a year. The East was assigned a young coach, Scott Middlemass who trained us very briefly before he went on an extended vacation to England to take care of Visa issues. That was when my team was introduced to a new coach, John Thompson.  I liked Coach John right away.  He must of liked me too because he was always yelling my name on the field. Over the years that Coach John coached us, I learned to “RELAX AND PLAY SOCCER”. John had drilled this into our heads. In fact, one game Coach John was so relaxed that he left in the middle of a game to use the restroom.  We were fine, but the parents were very nervous!

Since most of the girls from the East and West were entering high school, Farrell Pomponio, Ty Abilla, Jess Talarico and I who were playing up a year needed to find a team for the fall. The Barons had tryouts and a new U14 team was formed.  The four of us were the only age appropriate players and the remainder of the team was playing up. Coach Scott was assigned to this team and we won our SJGSL division.

In the spring, we returned to our U15 team. During the summer, it was decided to merge the East and West teams and attempt to start an age appropriate team for the four of us. Coach Scott had tryouts and many of the girls that played during the summer with us during Y-League decided to join the Banshees as regular players. We had the beginnings of an awesome team. We have played in the semifinals in the State Cup twice, gone to Florida for the Y-League Nationals, and traveled to England together.

If I can sum up my Barons experience, I would say I have learned the game of soccer and have been taught by awesome coaches. I have done this while at the same time having fun and making many friends along the way.  I am now looking at colleges and my team is concentrating on showcases. This is a very exciting time in my life and playing for the Barons is a big part of it. I plan on playing in college and spend my summers playing for the Barons."
