Scott Middlemass

 Scott Middlemass brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the South Jersey Barons Youth Academy. With his journey into Pro Soccer starting at the tender age of 16 as a apprentice at Carlisle Utd Football Club (England). He joined the Barons in 2001 from Norwegian side Fredrikstad. The Barons were then still a pro Team in the United Soccer League D3. He became the teams Defensive Player of the Year being and an ever present in the back four. He retired the following year due to re-occurring knee injury.
In 2003, Scott was the Barons Assistant Coach when the PDL team became only the 5th team in USL history to end the regular season unbeaten. He then stepped back from that part of the game to take up his new role as Technical Director of the South Jersey Barons/Banshees Youth Academy.
Scotts professional career spanned 12 Years and covered three continents. He had spells at Carlisle Utd (England), Preston North End (England), Torquay Utd (England), Northampton Town (England), Scarborough Town (England), Cambridge Utd (England), Cincinatti Riverhawks (USA), Coco Expo’s (USA), Foshan (China), and Fredrikstad (Norway).
Scott is a USSF and FA Licenced Coach and he holds the NSCAA Director of Coaching Dimploma. Scott overlooks all Youth Academy, Y-League, and Pre Super-Y teams. Scotts teams have in the past qualified for US Club Soccer and Super Y-League National Finals.
Neil Holloway

 Neil is a native of Reading, England, where he grew up supporting and playing for his beloved Reading FC as a school boy. At the age of 16, Neil’s dream came true when he signed as a trainee professional (YTS player) for Reading FC (EPL, Eng). After his apprenticeship had ended, Neil went to the F.A. exit trials in Blackpool to play infront of American college scouts. In the summer of 1997, Neil accepted a full soccer scholarship from Wheeling Jesuit University (WV). He graduated from Wheeling Jesuit University with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management.
While at Wheeling Jesuit, Neil garnered a reputation as a tenacious midfield player and finished his playing career with 49 goals and 39 assists. In 2000 and 2001, Wheeling were WVIAC regular season champions, and during the 2000 season, the team went undefeated (18-0-0) and were NCAA Regional Champions.
In 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2001, Neil was named to the WVIAC All-Conference First Team. In 2001, he was named the WVIAC Conference Player of the Year. In 2000 and 2001, He was named to the NCAA Regional All-Amercian Team and during his senior season, he was named a NCAA Division II All-American.
After a stellar college career, he joined the Barons in the 2002 Season not only as a player for the club, but also as the general manager. He made an immediate impact at the club and was named the captain in his first game. He captained the 2004 Barons team that made PDL history by becoming one of five teams to go undefeated (14-0-4) in the USL’s 20-year history. During the same season, he was named to the All-PDL and All-Conference Team. During that season, he scored a memorable goal from the half way line against the Syracuse Salty Dogs that will go down in U.S. Open Cup history.
In 2005, Neil became coach of the team and led them to a 14-3-1 record and a place in the Conference playoffs where they were beaten in the first round 5-4 by the Richmond Kickers Future. He also led the team to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup upsetting the Long Island Rough Riders (USL Second Division, professional) 4-0 in the second round, only to fall, in historic fashion, to the USL First Division’s Richmond Kickers in the next round 8-4. (12 goals stands as a record for the most total goals scored in a U.S. Open Cup game since the USL started to compete in the tournament in 1995).
Neil has been a part of the Barons franchise since 2002. For the 2007 season, he will relinquish his coaching duties to focus more on his role as the club’s general manager.
As well as being the GM of the Ocean City Barons, Neil coaches several of the South Jersey Barons youth academy teams. He is a Super Y-League ODP Regional Coach, holds a USSF License and a F.A. Coaching Certificate License. Neil resides in Ocean City, NJ with his wife Joanne and their three cats.
John Thompson

 John is a native of Penrith, England, a small town just outside of the Lake District. John became a part of the Barons franchise in May 2002 and has been heavily involved in the communtiy since his arrival in New Jersey. He joined the Barons after graduating from Lewis University (IL) where he received a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems. He is the IT Director for the Barons and in his second season as the Barons’ Assistant Coach.
John began his senior playing career with his local semi-professional team, Penrith, at the age of 16. He moved on to play for Queen of the South and Gretna before returning again to his beloved Penrith.
In 1998, John accepted a full soccer scholarship from Lewis University Head Coach Evan Fiffles. John had a stellar college career, playing in every game over his four years with the school. He ended his career with the Flyers as the school’s all-time leader in minutes played.
In 1999, 2000, and 2001 John was named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference First team, the NCAA Division II Regional All-American First Team and the NCAA Division II All-American First Team. In 2000, John led his team to the NCAA Final Four, defeating Neil Holloway’s undefeated Wheeling Jesuit University in the Elite Eight and in 2001, his college team finished the regular season undefeated (21-0-1) and finished ranked #1 in the nation. In 2001, John was named the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year. He finished his college career with 21 goals and nine assists. In 2007, John’s outstanding contribution to the Lewis soccer program was honored by the university when he was inducted into the school’s athletics hall of fame.
In 2002, he joined the South Jersey Barons in what was to be their last season in the professional ranks. He has played in over 80 games during his five years with the club. In 2004, he was named to the All-Conference First Team, All-PDL Team and was named PDL Defender of the Year. In 2005, he repeated as an All-PDL selection.
John coaches several South Jersey Barons youth academy teams, in addition to the Ocean City Barons Super-20 team. John is also on the Super Y-League Mid-Atlantic Regional ODP staff, and holds a USSF license and a F.A. Preliminary License. He resides in Sicklerville, N.J.
Leon Brown

 Leon Brown joins the Barons Youth Academy Staff from Wheeling Jesuit University (WV). Leon spent two seasons as the Mens Assistant Coach, and four years as a player. He is Director of Coaching in the Community for South Jersey Pro Soccer and the Super Y-League Co-Ordinator.
Leon finished his four years at Wheeling with a 66-15-4 record, he scored 30 goals, and tallied 33 assists. Leon earned several individual honors at Jesuit, he was a WVIAC All-Conference selection all four years he played. He was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American in 2003, and 2004. He was also named Academic All-American in the same two seasons.
Leon played right defender for the South Jersey Barons PDL team that went undefeated in the 2004 PDL seson winning the Mid-Atlantic Divisional Title and making the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Leon Graduated from Wheeling Jesuit with a Bachelors Degree in Business Management and a MBA, Masters Degree in Business Administration.
Cliff Simmons

 Cliff is the founder and current president of the South Jersey Barons. It all started in 1996 with the formation of the Barons D3 pro team and continued with the initiation of the youth club in 1999.
Cliff has coached several successful teams in the club including the 83/84 Boys who developed a number of players still involved with the club including current coaches Ian Simmons and Ryan Franks along with PDL players and alumni Joe Banks and Matt Maher. Cliff followed this up with another strong group the 86/87 boys who included Jim Davis and Bill Pinto members of this years PDL team. Cliff currently coaches the 89/90 girls and will be finishing up their college placement process this fall.
Cliff has a national USSF C license and was inducted into the United Soccer Leagues Hall of Fame this past winter which adds to his South Jersey High School Soccer Hall of Fame Induction and his Lower Camden County Regional School District induction through Edgewood High School (now Winslow). Ian Simmons

 Ian Simmons spent four years playing for the South Jersey Barons Youth Academy. Ian was a part of the first South Jersey Barons youth team when his team formed under the Barons banner in 1999. During his career as a Baron, Ian's team competed at the top level of youth competition and Ian was able to compete with players who have moved on to both the MLS ranks and the US Men's National Soccer team. Some of Ian's individual accomplishments as a Baron include time as a NJ youth state ODP player and an offensive team MVP.
Ian attended Edgewood/Winslow Township High School where he was a four year starter. Ian was named a 4 year all-Olympic Conference player, All-1st team in his Junior and Senior years. He was named an All-State group 3 player in his Junior year and in his senior season Ian was named a 1st team All-Conference, All-South Jersey, All-state group 4 player. Ian helped lead Edgewood to its first conference title in 20 years during his Junior season. Ian was team captain in his Junior and Senior years, and finished his High School career with 32 goals in 4 seasons.
Ian played two seasons at Rutgers-University Camden, helping the Scarlet Raptors record a school best 15-2-4 mark during his first season at the school. Ian graduated from Rutgers University Camden in 2007 with a B.A. in English and has since returned to finish certification courses for a future career in English Education. Ian began coaching with the Barons in 2006 and immediately became a part of the fabric of Baron/Banshee coaching. All told Ian will be entering his 8th year as a player and coach for the club continuing his personal tradition as a South Jersey Baron.
Joe Banks

 Joe Banks played his youth soccer as a captain for the very first South Jersey Barons Youth Academy team, and was named the team MVP in his final year.
He attended Edgewood/Winslow Township High School where he was a 4-year starter. He earned All-Conference, All-South Jersey, and All-Group 3 and 4 honors. He was the anchor of the conference winning defense during his junior year. As a co-captain during his senior year, he was chosen for the All-Inquirer First Team and participated in the All-South Jersey All-Star game.
Joe is a recent Drexel University graduate where he acquired a B.S. in Civil Engineering. During the 2002-2005 seasons, he was a 4-year letter winner and a 3-year starter. His career stats include 6 goals and 2 assists from the center-back position. Many of his opponents in the Colonial Athletic Association have gone on to play professionally, including former Baron and Hofstra graduate, Micheal Todd. He played two years in the Drexel defense alongside current New York Red Bull standout, Jeff Parke. In Joe’s final year, he was the team’s co-captain and was named to the Philadelphia Soccer Seven All-Star team.
Joe joined the Barons PDL team in 2004 and was a stalwart defender through the undefeated season. During that season, he was named to the PDL team of the week. He sustained a hamstring injury and missed the majority of the next season, but returned in the Summer of 2006 to lead the Barons in minutes played. For the 2007 season, Joe co-captained the PDL team and played a huge role in breaking the Barons record for consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.
Joe currently resides in Cedar Brook, NJ, working as a Civil Engineer in South Jersey.
Byron Carmichael

 Byron is a former Youth Team player with the South Jersey Barons who went on to become an outstanding collegiate athlete and professional player. He won two National Youth Soccer Titles at U17 and U18 levels before signing for Marshall University (OH)
Byron attended Marshall University Mens Soccer from 1999-2002. At Marshall Byron won several awards for his play, in 1999 he was the Mid-American Conference Newcomer of the year. In 200 and 2002 he was voted the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and a Mid-American Conference First team all conference selection. Bryon finished his career as the Mid-American Conference All-time Career points and goals Leader as well as Marshall Mens Soccer All-time Career points and goals Leader.
Following his collegiate career Byron moved on to the professional ranks, he played for the Cincinnati Riverhawks in 2003 for half a season before transfering to the Wilimington Hammerheads where he helped them win the USL Division 2 National Championship. At the start of the 2004 season Byron played for the Philadlphia Kixx in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). He then re-joined the Barons in the PDL during the summer playing in 8 games before joining the Utah Blitz for the second half of the season helping them land the Division 2 National Championship.
Byron currently plays for the Ocean City Barons PDL team, coaches the Barons summer camps and is Head Coach of two Barons Youth Academy teams.
Carmichael resides in Lumberton, NJ and is a teacher in the school district.
Ryan Franks

Ryan Franks was a member of the first team to play under the South Jersey Barons Youth Academy name from 1999-2002 along with current Barons coaches Ian Simmons and Joe Banks. As a youth player he was a member of the New Jersey ODP State Team and played his high school soccer for the Shawnee Renegades. As a senior at Shawnee in 2001, Franks was voted co-captain of the squad and helped his team win their conference, the South Jersey Coaches Cup, and Group IV State Championship while being named as an All-Olympic American Conference player and All-State Honorable Mention.
Franks then went on to play at the collegiate level at Gettysburg College where he was a four year letter winner for the Bullets and helped the team reach as high as 3rd in the National Rankings according to NSCAA. His senior year, he was named co-captain and was an All-Centennial Conference selection as a defender. Ryan was also a three time All Academic All-Centennial Conference selection from 2003-2005 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Gettysburg with a double major in Business Management and History and a minor in Education in 2006.
In 2006, Ryan remained in the Gettysburg area lending a hand to his Alma Mater as assistant coach for the Gettysburg College Men's soccer team. Upon returning to the South Jersey area in 2007, he returned to the Barons as a coach and has spent time training the U-12, U-13, and U-14 Boy's teams. He is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, U.S. Club soccer, currently holds an E License with New Jersey Youth Soccer, and will be looking to obtain his D license this year. Starting in the fall of 2008, Franks teaches at Cherokee High School where he is an assistant coach for the Boy's Varsity soccer team.
Dan Ortiz

 Dan Ortiz has over 17 years of coaching expereince on the East Coast. He has coached for Pottsgrove Soccer Club (PA), Upper Bucks Soccer League (PA), Pheonixville HS (PA) Atlantic United Soccer Club (NJ) and is now a member of the South Jersey Barons Coaching Staff.
Dan has a USSF ’C’ licencse and is looking to obtain his USSF ’B’ licesne in January of 2009. Dan has always had great success with all the teams he has coached which is due to his passion and love for the game, knowledge and ability to teach and motivate players. Dan considers himself a student of the game and is constantly studying film of soccer matches and reading about the game.
Dan was also involved with coaching the Ocean City Barons PDL team during the 2008 season.
Tim Oswald

 Tim Oswald is the Head Coach of NCAA Division III power house Rutgers-Camden University Mens Soccer team, in Oswalds first season at Rutgers Camden his team finished 13-4-6, were the ECAC Metro Champions (1st championship in Men’s soccer program history), NJAC Semifinalist’s and NJAC Regular Season Runners-Up. Tim will take join the Barons Coaching staff in the Spring of 2007 and will coach the Barons Senior Academy teams.
Oswald was a quality athlete during his playing days. He earned All-Catholic honors and added All-Area recognition from the Northeast Times in 1996 to cap his soccer career at Father Judge High School in Philadelphia.
Oswald continued his soccer career as a midfielder/forward at Elizabethtown College, where the Blue Jays earned national rankings during all four of his years, including Top 5 rankings during his junior and senior seasons. The Blue Jays played in three straight MAC championship games, winning the 1999 title and earning a trip to the NCAA tournament. During his senior year he earned conference Player of the Week, First-Team All-Conference and All-Academic MAC honors. In 53 career games, he notched 15 goals, 18 assists and 48 points at Elizabethtown.
Oswald received his B.S. in Elementary Education from Elizabethtown in 2001 and his Master’s in School Counseling from Widener in 2003.
Oswald spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Arcadia University, helping the Scarlet Knights achieve Division III Top 25 national rankings each year. Arcadia reached the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference championship game all three years, winning the PAC title in 2004 and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Prior to coaching at Arcadia, Oswald spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons assisting at Widener University. In his second season at Widener, the Pioneers achieved the highest NSCAA regional ranking in the history of the program and earned their second-ever ECAC post-season berth.
Oswald owns his NSCAA National Diploma, which he passed with distinction. On the club level, Oswald has recently become an ODP U-14 assistant coach with EPYSA, a U-11 head coach with FC Bucks and the U-17 head coach of FC Philadelphia United. He also has served as a co-head coach, along with Carlin, of the PSC Coppa-Bucks club team which won two EPYSA state championships and was nationally-ranked in the Top 25 in both 2004 and 2005.
Oswald, who lives in West Deptford with his fiancée Denise, works as a guidance counselor at Ridley (PA) Middle School.
Phil Randazzo

 Phil has contributed over 25 years to the game from youth levels through the collegiate ranks at William Paterson University. He currently holds a USSF license, and has trained teams with Premier Soccer Academy, United Soccer Academy, & All American Soccer, before joining the Baron’s staff.
As a youth player Phil was an All conference, All South Jersey, All state Honorable Mention, a four year starter, and a two year captain for Cumberland Regional High School.
In addition, Phil participated with the 1997 NJ State Cup Champion & 1998 NJ Finalists Cherry Hill Hawks Club team.
Phil focuses and dedicates his coaching philosophies to the development & progress of youth soccer players for the Baron’s Youth Academy.
Kevin Nuss

South Jersey native Kevin Nuss is the Goalkeeper coach for the South Jersey Barons and Banshees Youth Academy. Kevin has several years of coaching experience in South Jersey having worked with Highland Youth Soccer Club, Mount Laurel United, YSA, UK Elite, Shift FC, and the New Jersey Olympic Development Program. Kevin has also coached at the collegiate level for Rutgers-Camden University and Camden County College.
Kevin’s playing experiences include One season at Camden County College, One season at Rowan University, and Two seasons at William Paterson University. He also played in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League for the Ocean City Barons and the Delaware Dynasty.
Kevin has a Business Administration degree from William Paterson University, and an American Studies Degree from Rowan University. Kevin holds a USSF “D” License and the NSCAA Regional Goalkeeping Diploma II.
