U14 Boys SYL Match Report
South Jersey Barons 1-1 New York Red Bulls

Newark, NJ - The U14 Barons travelled North on Sunday to take on New York Red Bulls U14’s in their second game of the SYL Season. Having lost the first SYL game the team needed to come away with some points from a cross-divisional game.

The Barons got off to a bright start, and looked comfortable in possession against a very talented Red Bull team. The Barons made their early pressure count in the 12th minute, right midfielder Bobby Briggs produced some dazzling skills and beat the full back to the endline, he drove in a cross that striker Jared Evans skillfully diverted in of the left hand post.

Having been on the back foot for the opening segment of the game the Red Bulls began to excert themselves on the game and their pressure was rewarded when the linesman gave a penalty to the Red Bulls for a foul. Barons Goalkeeper Rich Ongaro saved the penalty and in the resulting panic to clear the ball it was inadverdanlty put into the net by a Barons defender.

The Red Bulls began the second half on the front foot and were pushing hard to take the lead, they went close on several occasions but some solid Barons defending made life difficult and the Red Bulls were unable to create any clear cut chances. The Barons tightened up in the last 10 minutes and were playing for the point, they twice came close to snatching a winner on the counter attack but were denied by some last ditch defending.

This was an excellent performance by the Barons who took a point from a very tough opponent away from home. They have a big weekend coming up with an away game against division leaders Reading Rage and a home game against the City Islanders.
