Barons draw 1-1 with Newark in 2008 debut
Ironbound Express shown two reds, hold on for draw
With gusty winds blowing off the nearby Atlantic Ocean, the Ocean City Barons opened the 2008 Premier Development League season with a 1-1 draw with the Newark Ironbound Express on Sunday night. The Express, an expansion team from North Jersey, played much of the game shorthanded after a red card was shown to one of their players in the first half. Despite the man advantage, the Barons were unable to capitalize until the 68th minute when John Fletcher nodded home an Adam Williamson corner kick to give the home side a 1-0 lead. However, the visitors managed to equalize less than 10 minutes later when former New York Red Bulls player Jerrod Laventure fired a shot that grazed the crossbar, and then deflected off the far post and into the back of the Ocean City net. Minutes after scoring his third goal of the season, Laventure won a free kick, and was sent off for head butting Barons’ defender Connor Gorman.

However, even with a two-man advantage and the wind at their backs, the men in red were unable to find a winner.

This time, the stakes are higher. Every national team call-up is important for a player, but there’s something special about a U.S. camp that will prepare the team for a match against Mexico.

"I’m not as nervous this time around," said White. "I felt the first camp went well, so I’m just doing my best to step it up a level for this next camp."

Ocean City Barons: '07 In Review
Recap of the season with audio highlights
2007 saw a lot of changes to the Ocean City Barons PDL squad. The only thing that didn’t manage to change was their success on the field.

Long-time Ocean City High School head coach Mike Pellegrino took over the Barons coaching duties, and enjoyed a tremendous amount of success with a relatively young team in his inaugural season. The club finished with a 9-3-4 league record which was good for second place in the Mid-Atlantic Division and their third trip to the playoffs in the last four years. Carey Stadium continued to bring the Barons a great home field advantage, as they finished with a 6-1-1 record at The Beach House to improve their all-time regular season home record to 17-3-4. Coach Pellegrino also guided the team to their pinnacle moment of the season with a 1-0 upset of the USL Second Division’s Crystal Palace Baltimore in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
