Former Ocean City Baron Tony Donatelli (Temple / Glenside, PA) helped the Vancouver Whitecaps defeat David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 on Tuesday night. The exhibition game was played in front of 37,104 fans at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta and was the second year in a row the two clubs have met in a friendly. Last year, the two clubs played to a scoreless draw in front of over 48,000 fans in Vancouver’s BC Place.
Donatelli, who played two seasons with the Ocean City Barons, started the match and played the first half as the Whitecaps were tied 1-1 at the break. One of Vancouver’s off-season signings Nicholas Addlery scored his first goal for the club four minutes into the match. Former Portland Timbers player Alan Gordon would answer for the Galaxy by scoring an equalizer off an assist by David Beckham just before halftime.
In the second half, Edwardo Sebrango scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 66th minute when he finished a Nick Webb cross from the right wing to put the Whitecaps up 2-1. The score would remain that way, giving Vancouver their first-ever win over a Major League Soccer team.
