Byron Carmichael's first career hat trick leads Barons to 5-1 win over Newark
17-year old Junior Chapman scores first career PDL goal, Jordan Bar makes Barons goalkeeping history

The Ocean City Barons’ all-time leading scorer Byron Carmichael notched his first career hat trick in only 35 minutes of work on Thursday night, leading the club to a 5-1 victory over the Newark Ironbound Express (6-8-1). The Lumberton, NJ native scored goals number 45, 46 and 47 of his Barons career, but has never scored three goals in a single game, much less a single half.

It was a day for firsts for the Barons at the Tennessee Avenue Soccer Complex. The first home game without rain, Carmichael’s first career hat trick, 17-year old Junior Chapman and 19-year old Neal Melchionni each scored their first career PDL goals, and goalkeeper Jordan Bar makes history as the first Barons keeper to ever assist on a goal.

The Ocean City Barons have been eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after they fell to D.C. United, 2-0, on Tuesday evening at the Maryland Soccerplex. The Barons held the game scoreless until the 74th minute when a Christian Gomez penalty kick forced Ocean City to throw the kitchen sink forward looking for an equalizer, but they were unable to tie the game. United would add a late stoppage time goal to put the game away and end the Cup run of the tournament’s last remaining amateur club.

Many of the more than 2,000 fans in attendance, many of them Barons fans who traveled down to the game, expected the defending Open Cup champions would have more possession, increasing their opportunities for goals, but numerous players stepped up on the Barons’ defensive end to keep the game level going into the halftime break.

O'Donnell's Observations: Confederations Cup Final
by Paul O'Donnell

A game of two halves with the Americans ascendant in the opening 45 and the 2nd totally dominated by Brazil. The faintest of touches by Dempsey opened the scoring in the 10th minute as he changed the direction of a Spector cross that eluded Caesar. In the 27th Ricardo Clark intercepted a Brazil pass and sent Donovan up the middle on a counter with Charlie Davies that was an example of perfect execution with Donovan taking the return from Davies, eluding the last defender with a nice touch and banging home his shot low to the near post for the 2-0 lead. Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) and Ryan Richter (LaSalle / Southampton, PA) each scored for Ocean City, while Barons goalkeeper Jordan Bar (Fairfield / Centerville, MA) made five saves to earn his first PDL win in. 3rd Barons home game moved to Tennessee Ave.
With Open Cup game the day before, July 1 match vs. Newark Ironbound Express moved to July 2

The Ocean City Barons home game on July 1 against the Newark Ironbound Express has been moved to July 2 at the Tennessee Avenue Soccer Complex. The change comes in combination with the Barons having to play their Third Round U.S. Open Cup game on June 30 in Boyds, MD and the Carey Stadium re-sodding project needing more time to finish. Kick off for the July 2 match will be at 5:30 p.m. due to the lack of lights at the Tennessee Avenue field.

Carey Stadium is expected to be ready for the Barons’ Fourth of July home game against the Ottawa Fury (3 p.m. kick off).

Observations: USA's final match miracle at the FIFA Confederations Cup
by Paul O'Donnell

Back in April, 2007, the principal issue swirling around the Men’s National Team was the "interim" tag hanging around Bob Bradley’s neck. I said this at the time: “This needs to be said; Bradley knows the young American players better than any man walking the face of the earth today. He has worked with them at U20, U23. He knows who they are and what they can contribute better than anyone and surely better than any ’big name’ international that you may have been reading about.” That knowledge of the players available played a key role in the revival that seemed out of the question.

The Ocean City Barons pulled off the biggest win in franchise history with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Real Maryland on Tuesday night in the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt
U.S. Open Cup.

J.T. Noone
(Temple / Harrisburg, PA) converted a penalty kick in the second period of extra time to give the Barons their second straight win over a professional opponent in the 95-year old tournament. Ocean City becomes only the sixth amateur team to ever upset back-to-back professional clubs.

The Barons, made up mostly of college players,  will travel to the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, MD on June 30 to face D.C. United of Major League Soccer. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.

"This is undoubtadly, the biggest win and the biggest occasion in Barons history to date," said head coach Neil Holloway. "Beating two professional teams and then to move on to play one of the most famous clubs in the country in D.C. United, it’s really just incredible."

For the second time in three years, the Ocean City Barons have pulled off an upset in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at the expense of the USL Second Division’s Crystal Palace Baltimore. The Barons used a pair of first half goals from Byron Carmichael (Marshall / Lumberton, NJ) and a J.T. Noone (Temple / Harrisburg, PA) tally late in the game to eliminate the professional side at Carey Stadium, the same place they pulled off their 2007 upset. With the victory, the Barons will host another USL-2 team, the Real Maryland Monarchs, next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will take on a yet-to-be named Major League Soccer team in the Third Round.

In the lone upset of the Open Cup’s First Round, the Barons become the first amateur team to eliminate a pro team in the 2009 edition of the event. It was the third Open Cup win over a pro team in club history, with all three coming at The Beach House against USL-2 opponents (2005 - Long Island Rough Riders, 4-0 & 2007 - Crystal Palace Baltimore, 1-0).

Ryan Finley moves up ladder to PDL team
Former U-17 national teamer becomes youngest to score for Barons' PDL squad

Finley competed on the international stage with the U.S. U-17 National Team
At the Premier Development League (PDL) level, high school soccer players rarely find the field. Rosters are usually made up of top college players, veterans and even a few former professionals, making it difficult for a player of that age to crack the starting lineup. But Ryan Finley (Rancocas Valley HS / Lumberton, NJ) isn’t your typical high school player.

Finley is returning to Rancocas Valley High School (RVHS) this fall after spending 18 months at the U.S. Soccer Under-17 Residency Program located at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he had the opportunity to train at the United States’ premier soccer school. After gaining a tremendous amount of international experience, the Lumberton, N.J. native returned home and joined the Ocean City Barons PDL side for the 2008 season.
